What SSL Actually Does

An SSL certificate encrypts traffic. Installation enforces it.

SSL encrypts the connection between your site and visitors — protecting data in transit. But just having an SSL certificate doesn't mean HTTPS is working correctly. HTTP requests still need to be redirected to HTTPS. Mixed content (images or scripts loading over HTTP) still needs to be resolved. Without these steps, browsers still show security warnings.
