What the Migration Covers

A migration isn't just copying files.

Most people underestimate what a proper migration involves. Moving the files and database is only part of it. The DNS cutover has to be coordinated to minimize downtime. SSL has to be installed on the new host before the switch. The WordPress configuration has to be updated to reflect the new server. Email DNS has to stay intact through the transition.

Get any one of those wrong and you're looking at downtime, broken email, or SSL errors — even though the site "moved successfully." We handle the full process, in order, and verify everything works before completing the cutover.

Set up new hosting account
Provision your new hosting plan, configure the server environment, install WordPress.

Migrate files and database
Export all WordPress files and the database from the old host. Import to the new environment.

Configure and test on new host
Update WordPress configuration, install SSL, verify the site loads correctly on the new server via hosts file testing.

Coordinate DNS cutover
Update nameservers or A record with minimal TTL. Monitor propagation. Confirm live switch.

Post-migration testing
Verify SSL, check all pages, test contact forms, confirm email DNS is intact. Document and hand off.
What Goes Wrong With DIY Migrations

These are the issues we see most often when people try to migrate themselves — and end up with us fixing it after the fact.

DNS cutover too early
Updating DNS before the new host is fully configured means visitors hit a broken or blank site during propagation.

SSL not installed on new host
Forgetting to install SSL on the new server before cutover results in a security warning on the live site immediately after migration.

Email DNS broken during move
Updating nameservers without preserving MX, SPF, and DKIM records kills email delivery — sometimes for days before it's noticed.

Hardcoded URLs not updated
WordPress stores the site URL in the database. If not updated after migration, internal links and media break.

Incomplete database export
Large databases time out during export. Missing tables mean missing content, settings, or users on the new host.

File permissions wrong
Uploading files with incorrect permissions can break WordPress admin access, media uploads, or plugin functionality.
